How to Create Hygge at Home

As the cold, gloomy, winter days fast approach us, we decided to take a look into the home décor concept of hygge.

Hygge, pronounced “Hoo-ga”, is a Norwegian term for wellbeing. It embraces simple pleasures in life and the art of creating an inviting, cosy space for friends and family to gather. It was created as a concept and lifestyle by the Danish in the 18th century. The Danes are well known as being rated the happiest people on earth. Their lifestyle transverses both winter and summer but as Scandinavia is renowned for their cold seasons, the hygge interior trend can be well embraced in winter.

Hygge interior is all about feeling warm, comfortable and cosy within your home. Stick to a neutral colour scheme, you don’t want colours be overwhelming or to clash. Any colour and décor that is added to your home should create a harmonious, peaceful atmosphere.

Invest in candles and scatter them around your home. Whether scented or unscented, candles add a beautiful element, the flickering light has a real calming effect and can quickly lift a dull mood.

Lighting plays a huge part in the hygge interior trend. Use lamps with warm light bulbs and let natural light beam through the windows. Combine warm lighting with cosy, soft textures like woollen throws, big soft floor cushions and chunky knits. The aim is to make your home as comfortable as possible. Roughly place a large fluffy throw over your bed and couch with big soft cushions.

Make sure you get rid of clutter and keep your home rather simple. Statement furniture pieces like a large wall mirror or a soft floor rug make for better décor. Incorporate natural elements into your home by choosing furniture with accents of natural wood. Natural, earthy materials help create a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Simple vases filled with greenery, flickering candles and a collection of little books will look lovely sitting on your dining and coffee table. Hanging artwork of earthy elements can add a nice feature statement to a dull room. A combination of textures, natural tones and small details are all combinations of the hygge décor. Think, less is more!

To embrace the hygge lifestyle take time to enjoy the simple pleasures by curling up on a beautiful lounge, scattered with textured throws and cushions. Surround yourself with flickering candles and enjoy a hot cup of tea.

Hygge is about being aware of special moments and creating a sense of togetherness. Welcome close friends and family to your cosy home for a beautiful candle lit dinner. Unplug from everything digital and truly enjoy the present moment.
